/history/

The building of the present Contemporary Art Centre was opened for the public back in 1968.

Designed by the architect Vytautas Cekanauskas, it then housed the Art Exhibition Hall.

In 1992 the institution changed its name to become the Contemporary Art Centre and turned in a new direction of building an art centre oriented towards the experience of artistic institutions all over the world, instead of the official soviet art hall. The CAC is a public institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

/activities/

The CAC presents a wide panorama of Lithuanian and foreign art. It organises a large number of retrospective exhibitions of well-known local and foreign artists; however, the main directions of the CAC are representation of the newest trends in art.

The CAC organises an increasing number of complex exhibitions designed specifically for its space. The CAC does not limit itself to figurative art; it also presents independent film, music and contemporary dance projects.

The CAC works together with a number of overseas cultural support institutions (the British Council, Great Britain; AFAA, France; NIFCA, Nordic countries; IFA, Germany; the Swedish Institute; Pro Helvetia; Switzerland, etc.).

A significant number of projects are implemented in co-operation with other museums and centres of similar nature (Oslo National Museum of Modern Art, Norway; Contemporary Art Centre "Le Magasin", Grenoble, France; Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm, Sweden; Tallinn Exhibition Hall; Budapest Art Gallery, Hungary, etc.).
